I don’t know about you, but I have always dreamed of going away for Christmas. Now that I have children, I feel like I can live most of my childhood dreams through them. I wouldn’t want to go somewhere hot and sunny though… I’d want to stay in log cabins around an open fire with hot chocolate and comfy PJ’s, playing a CD of my favourite Christmas songs. Heaven.
I have compiled a list of a few gorgeous destinations, that I believe would make the most amazing Christmas holidays for the whole family. All of these destinations are also available on Clickstay, a holiday home rental site with thousands of luxury properties across the globe:
Imagine the pleasure of being able to take your children on a real life sleigh ride? One of the main attractions is the Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi, the capital of Lapland, which also has a reindeer farm and offers snowmobile rides! Being able to meet reindeers at Christmas would be a dream come true for any child… especially when followed up with cookies and juice.
This incredible luxury Clickstay cottage in Lapland would be the ideal place to stay, and especially as it sleeps up to 20 people. You could go as a whole family and spend Christmas together, true tradition style.
New York, USA
If you’re going to celebrate Christmas, you should definitely do it in the city known for it’s elaborate celebrations.
I have mentioned it before, but New York will forever be on my bucket list of somewhere I would love to visit during the festive season. Although I definitely think it would be one for when the children are slightly older, I think Christmas in America would be amazing and certainly unforgettable. I’d love to hold their hands as we ice skate around Central Park, observe the most beautiful window displays and join in the count down as all of the lights illuminate around the city. I have also heard that they do the most breath taking lantern releases too, for everyone to get involved in.
It may be because of my obsession with the movie Elf, but ever since I heard that the Rockefeller Centre Christmas tree is almost 100 feet tall, I have been absolutely dying to see it.
For a more toned down option, Tuscany is also on my list of places I would love to visit in the winter. Located in central Italy, you would only be a short travelling distance from some of Italy’s most famous landmarks. At Christmas you can visit real nativity scenes and enjoy wonderful Italian Christmas markets, with a whole variety of foods, unique gifts, roasted chestnuts and more. Oh and wine. Don’t forget the wine.
Tuscany definitely gives off a more traditional feel for me, and I think it would be so nice to really take in that personal family time and enjoy each others company too.
The Lake District, England
Lastly, the Lake District in Cumbria is a fantastic choice for a relaxed family getaway. It is also somewhere I love to visit no matter the time of year. If you’re from the UK, you probably already know how beautiful the Lake District actually is.
This would definitely be the best Christmas destination when planning a quiet stay with limited outdoor activities. Like Tuscany, there are Christmas markets, people performing Christmas songs live, outdoor light switch-on’s and a Santa’s grotto, of course. I definitely feel the Lake District is more suited to all ages, and will keep everyone happy. You could also make your own fun by taking board games with you and baking Christmas treats together for bonding time!
Do you prefer staying at home for Christmas? If you could go away as a family, where would you go?
